Healing Isn't Your Job

How to Put Down the Fight, Quiet the Mind, and Let the Healer Within Lead

You have been trying so hard. But all that trying? It might be what's keeping you stuck.

Every new protocol. Every specialist appointment. Every 3 a.m. search for the missing piece. This book asks you to put down the frantic fight that keeps your nervous system on high alert, quiet the mental noise feeding the exhaustion, and let your body's innate wisdom lead. It doesn't ask you to change your prescriptions or ignore your doctors.

What's inside

  • The Trap of Effort: why trying harder keeps you locked in fight-or-flight, and how to heal by subtracting rather than adding.
  • Seven Minutes to Heal: a simple daily practice built around the art of non-doing.
  • The Mental Shower: a quick ritual to wash off the weight of a day that was never yours to carry.
  • Intuition vs. Fear: how to tell true inner knowing from your mind's anxious guessing.
  • Living With Chronic Pain: what to do when the body is loud and presence feels impossible.
  • The Setback Survival Guide: for the days you fall backward, because you will.

Short chapters. Plain language. Nothing you have to believe in advance. It won't sell you a miracle cure, and it won't tell you your pain is a failure of perspective. Your suffering is real. So is the part of you that remains untouched by sickness.

I Don't Dwell

How I Got Well Before I Knew Why: A Multiple Sclerosis Memoir

At thirty-seven, Sam J. Shelley was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Fourteen months later, the diagnoses were gone.

He was already living with bipolar disorder, chronic migraines, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, taking thirteen medications a day and walking with a cane. This is the account of what happened in between: from a hospital bed with a numb left arm and no explanation, through a ghost hunt, a book he could barely read and a few minutes of sitting quietly each day, to a neurologist looking at clean scans and clean bloodwork with nothing to say.

You won't find a protocol here. No diet, no supplement list, no ten steps. Just a paradox: the harder he fought his body, the sicker he became, and the moment he put down the fight, something far wiser stepped in to lead.

First published in 2014 and out of print for a decade, this edition pairs the original text with a candid new introduction on what he got wrong, what he would say differently now, and what has held up. For anyone tired of being told to try harder.

One man's account, not medical advice. Sam kept his doctors throughout, and asks that you keep yours.

Where Are Your Feet?

A Gentle Picture Book About Worry, Overthinking, and Finding Calm

A quiet book about a noisy head.

Some children carry their worries into everything: breakfast, the walk to school, a perfectly good afternoon that nothing is actually wrong with. Noodle is one of them. Noodle has two feet, the same as you, but hardly ever notices them, because Noodle's head is always somewhere else. Then one afternoon, a quiet question turns out to be the only thing that helps: Where are your feet?

There are no lessons and nothing to memorize, no breathing exercises and nothing a child has to get "right." It's a gentle introduction to mindfulness that never once uses the word: just presence, and a question.

Perfect for

  • The child who worries about tomorrow
  • The child who replays what somebody said yesterday
  • Anyone whose mind runs a little too fast, which is most of us

Includes a gentle guide for the grown-up reading along. Noodle still has a very noisy head. That's all right. That's what heads do.
